july round up
Glorious July, spent by (large) bodies of water. From a heatwave in England to surfing in the warm water of Costa Rica. See my stories here.
What I Read
Notes on Heartbreak by Annie Lord
Shuggie Bain by Douglas Scott
Small Bodies of Water by Nina Mingya Powles
“Where is the place your body is anchored? Which body of water is yours? Is it that I’ve anchored myself in too many places at once, or nowhere at all? The answer lies somewhere between. Over time, springing up from the in-between space, new islands form.”
MONTHLY FAVOURITES
Watched… My favourite director Mike Mills (who made Twentieth Century Woman and Beginners) made a black and white film about a 9 year old boy and his Uncle. It’s called C’mon C’mon. It’s everything I love about Mike Mills’ previous films; LA sunshine, complicated emotions, people being people and being kind, being tolerant, being badly behaved. At it’s core it is about listening; really listening to other people and what they have to say, but also what they haven’t said but they mean. A trait not found in too many of the men I know ;)
I can’t overstate how good Joaquin Phoenix is in this. And Woody Norman was gorgeous and sweet and English, which you won’t believe if you watch it because his American accent is perfect. And Gaby Hoffman, who I was happy to see so soon after finishing Transparent (I miss this series so much!).
Listened… A Life More Wild is a podcast about a series of wild walks with fascinating people, transporting you to the great outdoors and helping you connect with nature through their unique perspectives. To keep with my July theme of water, it seems.
Turned up for… Campfire Club for families at Charleston. There was singing by Sarah Jane Scouten and glorious sunshine and ice cream, butterflies and long grass and so many flowers. The kids played hide and seek in the walled garden and it almost felt like we belonged there.
