august round up
August is done and I am in search of a reset button. It has been epic; 8765 miles from Dominical, CR to Brighton, UK. 624 miles from Brighton to Battle, to Penzance and back via Bude. With pauses by pools in Costa Rica, rocks by the sea and campfires in Cornwall. Lucky us, not complaining about the slight whiplash. It has been my favourite summer.
What I Read
Lessons In Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
Ghost Lover by Lisa Taddeo
Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I didn’t think Taylor Jenkins Reid was for me. I thought her books were mainstream, lightweight which I suppose they are and I suppose that has made for the perfect accompaniment for a summer of rushing about and grabbing time to read in the inbetweens.
Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (LA, acting) was based in the 60’s, Daisy Jones & The Six (LA, music) was set in the 70’s, Malibu Rising (LA, surfing) in the 80’s and up next I have pre ordered Carrie Soto (tennis!), which was set in the 90’s. These escapist books really cleverly weave together characters and themes.
“It’s about a type of woman who I want to talk about, a woman who has naked ambition,” she said. “It has made me ask a lot of questions about myself, like, ‘At what point is it OK to lay it down and relax for a minute? When is enough enough?’” Jenkins Reid.
Well, quite.
