april round up

April was Cornwall and family, ceramics and dog walks. Very confusing weather and lots of reading and weights/tennis. The final week of my ceramics course is next week and I am only just getting started with it. It was something i signed up for which came out of doing the Artist’s Way for the second time. We learnt coiling and pinching, hard slab, soft slab and press moulding. It’s such a forgiving medium. I went into it with all the Artist’s Way advice ringing in my ears; don’t be attached to the outcome, enjoy the process, forgive yourself for being a beginner, no judgment, no criticism, play, dig deep, use the fuel from my inner child to guide my way. I decided that style wise I was going to throw good taste to the wind and I decorated my jug with rainbows and polka dots, my wonky vase in stripes, messages which came from ego scars I sourced from my inner artist/child. It was glorious and fulfilling. A flow state that I haven’t accessed enough this year.

What I Read

  1. We Were Liars by E Lockhart

  2. Evidence of the Affair by Taylor Jenkins Reid

  3. I’m A Fan by Sheena Patel

  4. Wise Words for Women by Donna Lancaster

  5. Children of Paradise by Camilla Grudova

I heard Donna Lancaster on The Happy Place and adored listening to her speak. So in Cornwall I grabbed this beautiful book which I had read the sample of on my kindle. Her wisdom is generous and reframed the idea of elders sitting around a fire to me in a whole new way.

MONTHLY FAVOURITES

Watched… Pretty Baby. Brooke Shields was a bit before my time but I was aware of her as this beautiful human. That she was but not just on the exterior. What a time to be a child star, no doubt she was put in some awful situations. I think it is so brave of her and Pamela Anderson to come out and speak their truth, their stories.

Listened to… Fearne Cotton with Donna Lancaster on Happy Place. Hard recommend.

Turned up for… Aldous Harding at the dome with my 9 year old daughter. It was her first gig. What a way to start! H. Hawkline provided us with a brilliant warm up set. We have been listening to this ever since. Aldous was weird and wonderful, utterly unique and quite bizarre simultaneously. The Guardian described it better than I could.
