october round up
Well, Happy Halloween/Samhain/The Blóts depending on what you celebrate. Being a child of rural beginnings I like that this day signals the beginning of Winter and the end of harvest. My kids like the sweets. October has been (worryingly) warm but full of lovely dog walks and trips to the beach in the sunshine.
I took on a few too many contract hours for the puppy’s happiness anyway and I am looking forward to next month where I get back to working with the ladies who I love to work with. First up a stylist and then a yoga instructor.
It’s the season of books…
What I Read
The Paris Library by Janet Skeslien Charles
At The Table by Claire Powell
Pure Colour by Sheila Heti
Ten-ager by Madonna King
The Paris Library felt like a big hug. A lovely historical fiction spanning generations from Paris in 1939 to Montana in 1983. It’s really a tale of lessons learnt and friendship. Friendship where you don’t expect it, between a teenager and an older lady. A vital friendship which essentially saves them both. We need more of these, of community and inter generational friendships. An issue brought up in Ten-ager. If anyone has a girl near the age of 10 I really recommend this book, I have highlighted a huge amount of the book to go back to.
MONTHLY FAVOURITES
Watched… Watch Out For The Big Grrrls - Lizzo made a programme about looking for backing dancers for her live tour and it is both bonkers and brilliant. Big ladies, ladies who can dance their arses off, who have rhythm and speed and it is so over the top and wonderful it absolutely filled me with joy.
Newsletter… Abigail Bergstrom’s newsletter is astute and accurate and filled with information about the publishing world and brilliant observations.
Turned up for… Marlon Williams played at Patterns. A New Zealander with Maori heritage who toured with Lorde last year, he has vocals like early Elvis but is somehow super cool, catchy with synth pop songs which stay in your head for days. Really fun gig.
